Whatever Happened to the Jetset?
There was a time when travel was glamorous. When women filled their Louis Vuitton steamer trunks with evening gowns for an Atlantic crossing and donned the latest designer daywear when they were lucky enough to fly instead. Fast forward to the present day of sweats and backpacks, and it’s no wonder I long for a time when travelling meant looking pretty. It was such an event, in fact, that fashion magazines devoted entire issues to travel, like these 1934 gems with covers by the famous Art Deco illustrator Erte.
Vogue and Modes et Travaux Magazine covers also highlighted traveling in style in the 20s and 30s. Here are a few examples…
I’m all for comfort, but today’s casual lifestyle sometimes makes me forget that every day should be special. A dress with flats can be just as comfortable as shorts and flip-flops, and infinitely more attractive. This summer, I’m going to make an effort to be a little more fabulous. But I will draw the line at walking through the airport in Jimmy Choo stilettos.
