Whatever Happened to the Jetset?

There was a time when travel was glamorous. When women filled their Louis Vuitton steamer trunks with evening gowns for an Atlantic crossing and donned the latest designer daywear when they were lucky enough to fly instead. Fast forward to the present day of sweats and backpacks, and it’s no wonder I long for a time when travelling meant looking pretty. It was such an event, in fact, that fashion magazines devoted entire issues to travel, like these 1934 gems with covers by the famous Art Deco illustrator Erte.

Vogue and Modes et Travaux Magazine covers also highlighted traveling in style in the 20s and 30s. Here are a few examples…

I’m all for comfort, but today’s casual lifestyle sometimes makes me forget that every day should be special. A dress with flats can be just as comfortable as shorts and flip-flops, and infinitely more attractive. This summer, I’m going to make an effort to be a little more fabulous. But I will draw the line at walking through the airport in Jimmy Choo stilettos.

The Gypsy Caravan

Today I spent the very early morning hours at the annual Gypsy Caravan Flea Market with my dear friend Cheryl. We had to wade through lots of gourd birdhouses and metal chickens to get to the good stuff!

I picked up two incredible 1940s barkcloth pillows for the equivalent of a venti latte!  Then I found some great vintage clothes, including these three bright prints and a pair of 1940s silk pajamas from Japan.  The pillows are heading for my sofa but the vintage clothes will be coming to the shop soon so stay tuned!

The most creative vendor at the market today was, the appropriately named, Gypsy Alley!  They were stocked full of vintage furniture and home goods in every bright color imaginable and I adored their line of inspirational luggage!  You can find Gypsy Alley on Facebook or on their blog.

Hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!
